Exegesis
definition - critical analysis of a word or literary passage; esp. biblical (literally means "out trace"--to trace out the meaning)
1. What does it say? --- make it clear (exegesis) Nem. 8: 7,8
the passage says one thing (2 pet. 1:20,21)
2. What does it mean? --- give the meaning (hermaneutics) Acts 8:30-35
the passage means one thing (2 pet. 1:20,21)
3. How does it apply?
can have multiple applications; but never contrary to intended meaning!
remember " a text without a context is a pretext"!
1) select a limit ( book, chapter, verse, or word)
2) read 2 times thru
3) gather other info; p.p., bible dictionary, bible atlas, etc.
4) re-read 2 times (on the 4th time thru....
5) note any apparent outline or division of subject, natural or unnatural ; write it down!
6) do word study
a) look up & log all major word meanings & root words ( write it down...don't be lazy!)
b) note "word plays"
c) notice repeated words or phrases
7) answer 12 questions ( before Hermenutics )
