Typology - Types, Antitypes and Numbers

!!!!!!!don't be stupid!!!!!!!
seriously, people can take this stuff WAY out into left field; stay focused on God, o.k.?

A. Typology ( type is inferior to antitype in that it's only a shadow)
     1. Definition: a type of old testament person, place, thing, or event that prefigures a person, place, thing, or event in the new testament called the antitype.

     2. Points to consider
pointer- the type is always temporal; the antitype is eternal
pointer- not all elements of type have direct bearing on the antitype
pointer- different than a symbol in that it foreshadows

     5. Interpreting Types

start w/ clear statements of the N.T. concerning type
start w/ sound scriptural doctrine (types are only for illustration)
take a type no further that the real point of likeness (similar)or contrast (antithetical)
if a type is not clearly defined in the N.T. as such; EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION!
refuse fanciful and far- fetched interpretations of types
           refuse unwarranted typological illustrations

NOTE!
Remember, just because the old testament is the shadow of what was(is) to come doesn't mean the people and events weren't real. ALL the events and people in the O.T. really happened!
